Torchwood premiered last night on BBC 3, so here are my thoughts.
 

Things I liked

Aerial shots of Cardiff making it look uber-cool.  (Well, if it works for Grimsby in that fish finger advert..)

Design of the Hub - sort of geeky and quirky

Shock bits - I'd kept away from spoilers, so Susie's fate was a surprise (bit sorry, though.  She had potential as a character).  And Captain (Jack) Scarlet!  

Jack's obsession with the Doctor - he keeps his hand in a jar.  Ah, bless!  Those Jack/Doctor fics are looking a lot more canon now, although you could argue that his obsession stems from the fact that he wants to know what the hell happened to him, and figures that the Doctor is the one most likely to have the answers.

The Buffy/Angel feel.  Liked those shows a lot, so this is no bad thing.  Especially if they're just used as a reference, not to spawn a rubbish copy of.

Things I didn't like

Rat jam.  No.  Just no.  Not necessary.  For needlessly perpetuating the idea that it's okay to use animals like this, nul points.

Owen.  Are we meant to like him?  Are we meant to find amusing a man who uses the alien equivalent of rohypnol to get laid?  If we're not meant to like him, and he's riding for a fall/redemptive arc that's fine.  If he's meant to be an anti-hero in the tradition of Avon and Spike, then it's a dismal failure as far as this viewer's concerned. 

MPREG - my least favourite fan fiction genre.  I shall go and hide from the fics that Jack's comment spawns.  Unless they're funny.


Overall - really enjoyed it.  Great potential for future development.

I've written slash for ... er ... too many years for me to want to remember. :-) I've read RPS as a guilty pleasure for several years as well, and am now taking the first tentative steps into writing it. So yes, I'm comfortable with it all.
